Armenia is the first Christian nation.

In AD 301 , Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion. It established a church that still exists independently of both the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches. The Armenian Apostolic Church is a part of the Oriental Orthodox communion, not to be confused with the Eastern Orthodox communion. During its later political eclipses, Armenia depended on the church to preserve and protect its unique identity.

The first Christian churches appeared in Vagharshapat (Echmiadzin), in Nakhijevan, in Artsakh and other parts of Armenia , often built upon the foundations of former pagan temples.

The exact design and place came to St.Gregory in a divine vision: Christ himself descended to the Ararat valley and struck with a golden hammer to indicate the future location of the cathedral. The name Echmiadzin means 'Only Begotten Descended'.
